About the Therapist

Hi, I’m Bethe Reed, LPC, a therapist specializing in the treatment of anxiety and depression for teens and adults. I also help people navigate relationship difficulties, life and work stressors, grief, substance use, body image, eating disorders, emotion regulation, life transitions and more.

I got my start in college counseling where I worked at the University of South Carolina with teens and young adults from all walks of life. I have experience treating a wide range of mental health concerns, and I'm excited to be opening this NEW counseling practice in Sumter, SC.

I believe that therapy should be a collaborative process. We will work towards goals that are most important to you, at your pace, in a relaxed, supportive setting, where you can feel confident about your care and safe to be yourself.

Sometimes the issues you’re facing may not fit a specific diagnosis. If you don’t see your concern listed, feel free to ask.

My practice is trauma-informed, LGBTQ+ affirming, and Health at Every Size (HAES) aligned.

  • I frequently work with people who are misunderstood or slightly at odds with the world around them.

Often these are people who experience emotions intensely or have experienced trauma, and get stuck in patterns of self-destructive behavior and negative thought cycles to get by. They often find that the methods that helped them survive before start to take on a life of their own – whether it’s an eating disorder, substance use, overthinking and anxiety, or even unhealthy relationship patterns.

Sometimes these harmful patterns emerge as a way of coping with how society has treated a person. Many of my clients are people who have experienced social pressures or discrimination based on their race, religion, military or veteran status, gender, or sexual orientation.

Some are chronically misunderstood by others due to autism or ADHD, and struggle to thrive in a world that doesn’t line up with their natural thinking style and is often not very accommodating.

My commitment as your therapist is to hold a space where all parts of you – the good, the bad, and the in-between – can feel safe for exploration. I will help you deepen your understanding of yourself, develop new ways of coping, and build a life full of what you find most meaningful.

  • Below is a list of evidence-based therapies I incorporate in our work.

Together, we will put together a treatment plan unique to you. We might use one of these styles or a combination of several, depending on your background, preferences, and the concerns you are working through.

Person-centered - this means we focus on the issues that are most pressing for you, move at your pace, work towards goals that are meaningful to you, and take into consideration all factors of your unique identity.

DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) - helps you develop skills for regulating strong emotions and learn to navigate conflict in your relationships.

ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) - especially helpful for anxiety and depression. Learn to identify what is most important in your life and move towards it, creating a deeper sense of fulfillment, even when anxiety is high or life’s circumstances are especially difficult.

Attachment-based & emotion-focused - helpful when coping skills and looking at the problem “logically” are not enough. A deeper approach to interpersonal, emotional, and relationship distress.
